Teresa Jacobs is not your typical politician.

Many people know Teresa as Orange County Mayor, but if you ask her what’s the most important title she has held, she’ll quickly respond, “mom!”

Teresa was the first in her family to attend college.  She says she got a great education at FSU, but an even greater husband - Bruce.  Teresa and Bruce have been married for 37 years and have four children — Josh, Max, Lisa and Chase — all proud graduates of Orange County Public Schools. Their twins, Max and Lisa graduated from the University of Central Florida and their oldest and youngest sons, Josh and Chase graduated from Florida State University.

When her children were young, Teresa was actively engaged in their schools, volunteering in the classroom and serving on School Advisory Councils and the PTSA.

Teresa never set out to be a politician. She still cringes at the title and much prefers to be call a public servant. Her perspective on public service changed shortly after her family moved to Orlando. Her children’s school became increasingly overcrowded and she learned the county was planning to build a road through her neighborhood.  Both of these issues stemmed from the same core problem, failure to adequately prepare for the future.

Teresa tried to bring about change from the outside and joined the Orange County Homeowners Association Alliance, where she soon became president.  In a few short years, she would change course and decide to run for a seat on the County Commission.  She took on a well-known and well-funded incumbent. And to nearly everyone’s surprise she won by a landslide 68%! She was re-elected to her second term, unopposed.

After eight years as a Commissioner, she was termed out. In 2010, she decided to enter the race for Orange County Mayor. As with her first election, she was the last to enter, and her opponent had twice as much money in his campaign account.  But just like her first election, she won by 68%.

From the outset, Teresa Jacobs stood out from typical politicians by speaking out when she saw problems and taking a stand. Teresa has never been afraid to challenge the status quo. And she doesn’t let partisan politics stand in the way of common sense solutions.

Most importantly, Teresa cares passionately about our community and even more passionately about our children and their education. That’s why she has entered the race to become Orange County School Board Chair.
